Frequently asked questions
Initially, sessions for the 4 Results In Reading program will be available in Bardon/Rainworth before and after school. Depending on the level of interest expressed, additional locations may become available in the future.
If your child finds it challenging to connect letters with their corresponding sounds, struggles with spelling basic sight words, or reads passages slowly and with difficulty, they may be a low-progress reader.
Some signs that may indicate your child is struggling with reading:
Difficulty with Phonics: If your child struggles to recognise and pronounce individual sounds and sound combinations (phonics), it can hinder their ability to decode words and read fluently.
Poor Comprehension: Difficulty in understanding what they read or recalling details from a text. Even if your child can read the words fluently, comprehension is crucial for effective reading.
Avoidance of Reading: If your child consistently avoids reading or expresses dislike for it, it could indicate that they find it challenging or frustrating.
Slow Reading Rate: Noticeably slower reading speed compared to peers of the same age and grade level may indicate difficulty with fluency.
Frequent Guessing: If your child frequently guesses words instead of sounding them out or relies heavily on context clues, it might suggest they struggle with decoding.
Difficulty Spelling: Reading and spelling skills are closely linked. If your child finds spelling challenging, it might be a sign they are finding it challenging to connect sounds to letter to form words.
The purpose of reading is comprehension.
If your child is using all their effort to hear sounds, and then connect those sounds to letters to form words, they can't think about what the words mean or attach any real meaning to what they are reading.
4 Results In Reading targets automatic recall of sounds, word parts and words, which many programs do not. Rapid automised naming and working memory is vital for your child to achieve fluency and then comprehension.
4 Results In Reading systematic synthetic phonics and reading program is a skills-based program designed to build the mastery of foundational literacy skills through continual review and assessment of reading fluency and skill acquisition.
The 4 Results In Reading program is non-categorical and treats only your child's reading abilities. Children diagnosed with ADHD/ Autism and other complex issues have progressed successfully through our programs.
Please complete the expression of interest form and we will contact you shortly to discuss your free assessment.
Term Program sessions are not available on Saturdays currently, Individual Program and One-On-One Individual sessions can be requested on Saturdays subject to session availability.
Instruction is explicit and based on extensive and ongoing reading instruction research. Tutors follow scripts and a structured sequence of activities with each session following the same routine:
introduction of key literacy concepts through lessons
your child practises these concepts with fun activities, reading and writing
automatic recall is monitored using structured checks
Your child moves to the introduction of the next key literacy concept when they have mastered the check. They do not have to master all activities in every lesson as content is reviewed continuously.
Because our programs are tightly scripted and monitored, a change in tutor does not change or disrupt a student's program in any way. Changing tutors also gives the advantage of having tutors working collaboratively to meet your child's literacy needs. It can also often be helpful for a different tutor to review a student's progress during the previous term and discuss the progress with a colleague during the handover process.
Students are allocated one or two tutors to work with them. Apart from tutor illness or other personal circumstances, these tutors remain with students for the duration of the school term. It is common for students to change tutors as a new school term starts. Our student monitoring and data collection procedures ensure students have a seamless transition.
While it is common for students to develop very positive and supportive relationships with their initial tutors, we encourage parents to reassure their children that the program will continue effectively with change in tutor and to focus on the program and their progress rather than their tutor.
Those with an active enrolment can currently access up to 2 replacement lesson vouchers each term, in case you need to miss a lesson due to illness or other important commitments.
To access a replacement lesson voucher, the lesson must be cancelled prior to its starting time.
Refer to Terms of Service for more detail regarding Missed Lessons.
One term runs for a duration of 10 weeks (according to Queensland school terms). There is a requirement of a minimum two sessions per week. If you are wanting to accelerate your child's learning, the most important thing you can do is practise! Children at risk of reading difficulties often need 75 exposures to retain something, compared to just 6 exposures for some of their peers.
4 Results In Reading is closed on Sunday's and designated Public Holidays in Queensland. Sessions are 30 minutes duration and completed in a small groups (maximum of 6 students) or one-on-one with a tutor dependent on which program your child is enrolled. You may be allocated up to a maximum of two tutors. End-of-term testing is done during lesson time. There are no further fees for testing.
Mid-term starts are in weeks 3, 5 and 7 of each school term (excluding Term 4). An ongoing enrolment recommendation will be provided towards the end of the Term. However, your tutor will provide ongoing feedback throughout the term.
Unfortunately, not currently. Our programs at this time are in person with the tutor face-to-face.
Progress depends on many things including: the number and severity of processing difficulties; whether there are attention issues as well; current levels of understanding; number of weekly practice sessions; and so on. As a rough guide we recommend a minimum enrolment of two terms. Tests from the original assessment are re-administered toward the end of each term to monitor progress. There are also extensive monitoring procedures used within lessons to ensure students' progress. The results of testing assist in determining whether more intervention is required.
It is advisable that parents discuss re-enrolment with tutors in the second half of the school term (week 6 onwards) to allow for re-enrolment places to be secured.
Every student is different, so we cannot always predict what gains they will make. Across our programs, on average after two terms (20 weeks) of instruction, students gain 12 months in reading accuracy. This is an average result and 4 Results In Reading cannot provide any guarantees regarding an individual student's progress.
Tutors who work in the 4 Results In Reading centre have gone through a thorough interview and training process. We require tutors to either have, or be in the process of obtaining, university qualifications in either Primary Education, Psychology or, Speech and language-related training. Tutors are required to have a sound knowledge and experience working successfully with children and families. All tutors are also required to have clearance for Working With Children Check (WWWC) at the time of employment and is re-validated annually.
Tutors complete extensive training in our 4 Results In Reading programs and centre procedures before they start. New tutors also complete observations and team-teaching sessions with qualified tutors where they gain expert feedback before they tutor students independently. Tutor observations are completed by the Literacy Director each term to ensure lessons are completed at the highest standard required, according to set program structure and strict assessment criteria.
Any issues with student progress are examined through a process in which the 4 Results In Reading tutor liaises with our Literacy Director.
Our Administrations Manager will be able to answer questions regarding assessment booking, term payments and program overview. Your child's allocated tutor/s will be able to give you information regarding your child's placement and progress within our 4 Results In Reading programs.
